Verdun is a small city in the north east of France. Verdun originates from the Latin Verdunum meaning strong fort which is very apt as Verdun is famous for two very important battles in French history. The first Battle of Verdun was in August 1792 between the French Revolutionary Forces and the Prussian Army, who were victorious and then opened up the path to Paris.
The second battle of Verdun was during world war one and was one of the costliest in terms of loss of life and large number of casualties. The battle lasted 11 months. There are numerous French and German cemeteries throughout the battle field and the largest is the French National Cemetery which has 13,000 crosses holding approximately 130,000 unidentified remains from the battlefield.
