An all too short stop off in Antequera

We took a short detour on our way down to Marbella to visit Antequera which is just across the county line in Andalusia.  The town has a host of historic monuments with more than 50 monuments and buildings dating as far back as the Bronze Age, such as the Menga Cave, Viera and Romeral dolmens.  The castle and Santa María Basilica can be found at the top of the town – another nice walk up and up and up….  In the historic centre there are a series of churches, collegiate churches, monasteries and convents, palaces, arches, gates, shrines, stately houses and a citadel. Most outstanding are Nájera Palace (18th century), currently the municipal museum, the Catalinas Convent and the palace of the Marquises of La Peña, in Mudejar and Renaissance style.

Although this was another wonderful find by Sheila, we could have done with a lot longer to explore this incredible city and all the wonderful old historic buildings.   We also wanted to visit the El Torcal but we missed the turn off!   But good to leave something to visit next time!  Enjoy the photos below.
