Basilica of St Mary the Major, Morella

We had a good night’s rest on Tuesday in anticipation of all the sights we had to visit and the steep climbs to visit them 😝

First up was the Basilica and it was incredible.

Transitional Gothic style build between the 13th and 14th centuries.  It has two gothic doors on the main facade presided over by the Mother of God and at the sides scenes of Jesus’ childhood.  The entrance doors are Moorish and were reinforced by nails.

The interior was wonderful.  The Choir a great example of low ribbed vaulting – challenging the laws of architecture.  It was constructed by the Morellan Pere Segarra.

The Choir’s staircase was also amazing – a snail staircase made of polychrome and golden plaster.  On the banisters is the representation of Christ’s genealogy by Josep Belli and the Adoration of the Magi and the Shepard’s by Antoni Sancho – 15th century.613FC194-765F-4311-BC24-92AE4F128763

The high alter has sculptures by Vicent Dols and paintings by Jeroni Jacint Espinosa.

And Sheila loved the stained glass window!!
